400GT and 400A

At the Paris Motorshow of 1976 Ferrari revealed its first car fitted with an automatic transmission, the 400A. This was a revised 365 GT4 2+2 with a larger 4823cc development of the V12 engine. The transmission was a three-speed GM unit. A manual model, the 400GT, was launched at the same time. The body remained essentially the same as the 365 GT4 2+2. A total of 354 automatic models and 147 manual cars were built.

In 1979 the engines gained a Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system which (due to emissions control systems) dropped the power down to 310bhp. This car continued in production until 1985 by which time 884 automatic and 424 manual versions had been produced.

Introduced in 1985, the 412 was a further evolution of the original 365 car, now with an engine displacing 4943cc and back up to the pre-injection power of the 400, namely 340bhp. The body underwent some minor changes, although it basically remained the same. Other technical modifications included the fitment of ABS for the first time on a Ferrari. Production ceased in 1989.
