At around the same time, the 2000 Spider
was released. Using the floorpan of the 1900 Super Sprint, it was built
by Touring and was fitted with the more powerful 115bhp version of the
1975cc engine. The gearchange was located on the floor, but until 1961
it was only a two-seater. In that year a 2+2 also became available.
Production continued until 1962 when all
three versions were replaced by the 2600. Volumes
were :
1958
saw the introduction of a new, larger Alfa Romeo saloon, in a class
above the relatively new Giulietta and
older 1900. The 2000 used the 1975cc dohc engine
from the 1900, albeit in a more tuned form producing 105bhp, and a similar
suspension layout, with a longer wheelbase and wider track. A five speed
gearbox was controlled by a column mounted lever, making the 2000 a true six seater.
At the end of 1960 the third variant on the theme, the 2000 Sprint, was introduced.
This was effectively the Spider chassis (with a slight stretch) and engine
with a new two-door four-seater body by Bertone, the actual designer being
a young Giugiaro. It was also the first Alfa Romeo production car with
four headlights !
