Dino 208 GT/4

In 1975, due to the Italian tax breaks, a 1990cc version of the dohc V8 was introduced into the 308GT4 car, producing the 208GT4. An undersquare engine, it produced 170bhp. Around 840 examples were produced until 1980.

208 GTB/GTS

Introduced in 1980, these cars (for the same taxation reasons) used the 1990cc V8 engine in the 308GTB/GTS body. Unlike the 308 models, which adopted Bosch injection in that year, the 208 models continued with 4 Weber 34DCNF carburettors. With the power output a mere 155bhp, these cars were rather slow (for a Ferrari) and production stopped in 1982/3 when they were replaced by turbocharged variants (see below). A total of 160 208GTS and 140 208GTB cars were built.

208 GTB/GTS turbo

Ferrari 208 turbo cockpit To address the rather weak performance of the preceding models, in 1982 Ferrari added a turbocharger (a K26 by KKK) and fuel injection (Bosch K-Jetronic) to the 1990cc engine. The compression ratio was also dropped to 7:1, but with a boost pressure of 0.7 bar the power went up significantly to 220bhp. This was initially only available in coupe (GTB) form, but the 208 GTS turbo was introduced a year later (1983).

It was differentiated visually by the NACA ducts in front of the rear wheels, a black spoiler above the rear windscreen and the three air exits from the radiator also being black. Production stopped in 1985 by which time 437 GTB turbo and 250 GTS turbo cars had been completed.

GTB turbo/GTS turbo

Late in 1985 the new 328 was used as the basis for a revised 2-litre model, the '208' was dropped from the designation and the cars went on to be sold simply as the GTB turbo and GTS turbo. A new IHI turbo and heat exchanger increased the power yet again and it continued in production until 1989. Some 308 closed and 828 open versions were built.
