Ferrari F355The replacement for the 348, the F355 was unveiled in May 1994 in Berlinetta and GTS versions. A full cabriolet, the Spider, followed later. A heavily revised and modified version of that preceding model, the F355 featured a 375bhp engine, now with five valves per cylinder (the last '5' in 'F355') and variable inlet and exhaust systems as well as a dry sump lubrication system and titanium conrods, all coupled to a six speed gearbox and limited slip diff. The suspension retains the standard Ferrari layout of double wishbones at all four corners, in the F355 with two position dampers, switchable by the driver to 'Sport' or 'Comfort' settings.
The external design was an evolution of the earlier car, the most significant difference being the deletion of the straked air inlets which dominated the sides of most of the last generation of Ferrari's. Replaced by large, more round(ish) units they reflect the general smoothing of the lines of the car with curves replacing the angular lines of the earlier car. At the rear twin round lights were adopted, following the style of the recently released 456GT, and the horizontal black slats, another feature of the previous generation of cars, were deleted.
Later, the F355 was chosen to be the first road car to use Ferraris Formula One-derived paddle controlled electronic gearchange system. Coupled with a hydraulically actuated manual gearbox, the F355 F1 enables you to change gear in 0.125 seconds.
The 355 was replaced in production by the 360 Modena.
